Seven Tips for Maintaining Optimal Oral Health

Jun 20 • 1 minute read

Your dental health is the first line of defense against harmful pathogens entering the body. This makes it important to maintain optimal oral health at all times to ensure good, overall general wellness. Here are seven tips you should be doing to make sure your dental health is in tip-top shape!

  1. Brush at least twice a day. Brushing once after breakfast and once more before bed can greatly improve your dental hygiene by ensuring plaque doesn’t harden to tartar. Individuals can even go as far as brushing after every meal, make sure to eliminate any food particles that may be left behind.
  2. Floss at least once a day. Food that gets stuck between teeth cannot be removed by brushing, which is why flossing can greatly improve your dental health. Implementing this habit with your daily brushing routine is a sure way to avoid cavities and protect against gingivitis.
  3. Rinse with Antiseptic Mouthwash. Your mouth is filled with hundreds of thousands of germs which develop the acids that damage teeth. Antiseptic mouthwash gets between the areas brushing and flossing cannot reach and kills these harmful pathogens.
  4. Avoid excess sugar. Foods and beverages high in sugar, like candy and soda, leave residual sugar on teeth, which bacteria feed off to cause cavities.
  5. Eat fruits and vegetables. In addition to their more well-known health benefits, the fibers in fruits and vegetables act as an interim tooth brush, brushing away food build up and plaque before it can develop into tartar.
  6. Visit your dentist twice a year. Scheduling a routine cleaning every six months eliminates tartar buildup that can no longer be addressed by brushing and flossing alone.
  7. Don’t Smoke! If your needed another reason to kick the habit, smoking can cause several oral health problems. Tobacco smoke destroys enamel, causes gums to recede, stains teeth, and is a risk factor for oral cancer.

While not an exhaustive list of dental hygiene efforts, ensuring these seven things are included in your dental health routine will provide you with the foundation you need for a lifetime of healthy, beautiful smiles.
